Review of The Education of Charlie Banks (2007) by Chris M — 30 Jun 2009
*** (out of four).
Effective, though ultimately messy drama that proves to be intelligently thoughtful and sadly overcooked.
In a great perforamce, Jesse Eisenberg is Charlie Banks. During a high school party he witnesses Mick (Jason Ritter), a local bully, severely beat up two guys. Charlie calls the cops, but recants his story soon after. Two years later at college Mick shows up and Charlie thinks that he is there suspecting that Charlie had turned him in.
Most of the film works really well. The dialogue and situations are well constructed as the themes touch on people trying to be comfortable in places where they don't fit. These are very touching moments. However, the story circles back to Mick shady past, losing much of its momentum.
