Review of The Education of Charlie Banks (2007) by Andy M — 02 Apr 2011
Directed by Fred Durst, this film had a surprising amount of heart, though the coming of age story centered around a guy who has a bully from his past turn up in his life while he's at college suffers from a muddied message. The film starts out basically telling us that the bully is a bad guy because he beats the holy dogshit out of a guy and Jesse Eisenberg's character turns him in to the cops. Then we spend the rest of the film being made to feel as if we're not giving the poor bully a chance when he turns up appearing to have 'reformed' his wicked ways.
Except that he hasn't. So...are we meant to hope for the best for him or what? As I said, it's a muddy 'message' at best. Decent performances, but a very vague through-line for you to follow.
