Review of The Education of Charlie Banks (2007) by Kelley H — 12 Jul 2009
This film is cringeworthy for anyone who's been on the receiving end of a bully. Despite how very elementary buttons those buttons are, this film succeeds in pushing them through Charlie's primary and secondary education, into young adulthood.
The storyline leans toward redemption at times, though never really spills into it. In that light the pace flags a bit and feels like pertinent bits of the story have been left out. The acting was well done,it just felt like the story itself couldn't decide where it was going.
By the time it meandered to the end I found I didn't really care how things turned out. Its messages on bullying, self-esteem and karma are clear, it just doesn't do a very good job of showing them.
