Review of The East (2013) by Michael T — 26 Jun 2013
Despite an underwhelming ending, "The East" is the first movie of 2013 that really had me thinking. The film's premise/theme is among my favorite to explore, and films talking about fighting types of corruption have always tickled my fancy.
That being said, I think "The East" has legs, mainly because it does a good job of adding suspense to its morals. Brit Marling is good in this role, and I foresee her either becoming the next Jennifer Lawrence, or the purely indie version of her.
Her work in the awful "Another Earth" is great, as is her cryptic turn as a cult leader in "Sound of my Voice", which is also directed by "The East's" Zal Batmanglij.
Ellen Page and Alexander Skarsgard are well cast in their slightly under-written roles, while Toby Kebbell steals the show in his supporting role as a freegan doctor. Overall, while the film has short comings, it's also one that has a lot of relevance and a strong backbone to back it up.
"The East" is Arpke Approved at 4 out of 5 stars.
