Review of The East (2013) by John N — 23 Oct 2013
Parts of The East are very well made. Zal is a very talented film maker and the acting is solid. The problem is the smaller details in the writing. The passing of time is very ambiguous, there are too many well-connected characters that make certain sub-plots too convenient, and the politics of the film gets incredibly heavy handed at times (and I'm somebody who is in agreement with the film's overarching themes).
Just a little touch of subtlety could have made this film a whole lot better. Disappointing.
