Review of The Eagle and the Hawk (1933) by Mike At The Movies B — 20 Apr 2018
Despite its age, this overlooked film still delivers a strong antiwar message. Stuart Walker is credited as director, but Mitchell Leisen reportedly directed most of it. The lead performances by March and Grant are effective without being overwrought, the aerial-combat scenes are well done, and although it runs only 68 minutes, the film doesn't feel underwritten.
There's a late perfunctory romance involving March and Carole Lombard (so perfunctory that Lombard's character isn't given a name) that feels tacked-on, but the ending is unexpected and must have been daring in its day.
