Review of The Duellists (1977) by Marshall F — 20 Oct 2007
Style and substance, Ridley Scott's first film is tragically obscure. Greatly indebted to Kubrick's BARRY LYNDON but also in many ways its equal. Being allowed to speak in their own accents must have given Keitel and Carradine increased confidence because they are both superb, the latter especially.
He gives the finest performance of his career. Only the narration by Stacy Keach seems out of place. Probably one of the finest debut films by any director in film history. Must be seen.
