Review of The Duellists (1977) by Michael D — 21 May 2017
The acting is very good (especially by Diana Quick) and the costumes and framing of the scenes are nicely done. However we never get a sense of what motivates Harvey Keitel's character to constantly wish to duel with Keith Carradine's character, other than a vague sense of honour and bravado.
Perhaps this is the point I.e. that thee is none, and that the movie is somehow a critique of pointless machismo. However this viewer at least could see why it would take tthe best part of two hours to reach this point.
It offers just the merest tantalising glimpse into the talent that the director would later show.
