Review of The Duellists (1977) by Simon S — 13 Dec 2007
Ridley Scott's first feature film makes the most of his now-trademark naturally lit photography. It's pretty much entirely about being pretty. If some kind of moral emerges about the interconnection of honour, violence and obsession (typical themes in Conrad, who contributed the bones of the plot) then it is largely through Harvey Keitel's outstanding performance - probably his career high - rather than Scott or Carradine's efforts.
It is very good looking, though, and preferable to any version of Blade Runner or anything Ridley has churned out since. It also sports a stunning wardrobe, a simple but very effective score and the two most realistic smallsword duels ever filmed.
I'm very fond of this film, although objectively it has too many flaws of pace and writing to be really great.
