Review of The Duellists (1977) by Stan R — 08 Sep 2009
This is my favorite piece of film. The story is as compelling to me as is the beauty found in the cinematography. The story has its origins in the real duels that two French Hussar officers fought in the Napoleonic era.
They fought their first duel in 1794 from which the loser who was forced to "retire" demanded a rematch. This rematch resulted in at least another 30 duels over the next 19 years in which the two officers fought mounted, on foot, with swords, rapiers, and sabers.
Honor, fear and hatred shape the lives of two men.
