Review of The Drop (2006) by Scott S — 21 Sep 2014

I was really excited to see The Drop. It is James Gandolfini's last role and it looked like a brilliant movie from its trailers. Well, my expectations were met and The Drop is a very well written crime-drama.

The story follows Bob, who finds himself in the middle of a robbery gone wrong at the drop-bar he works at. The story is fairly complicated and hard to explain, so I won't write down the whole plot here. The story is actually one of the movie's weakest points. Yes, it is a very well structured story with twists and some great moments. However, it felt pretty predictable sometimes and took a very long time to get going. The movie felt slow for the first two acts, and sped up near the third.

The cast is utterly incredible. Tom Hardy proves to be one of the best actors of our time as he gives yet another amazing performance as his quiet yet deadly character! The late James Gandolfini gives a great final performance and the rest of the supporting cast do fantastic jobs!

The directing is superb, with some shots of gorgeous cinematography. The musical score is great, the editing is very good and the sound is excellent. The bets part of this movie has to be the writing, though. Since this is not an action film, it relies only on dialogue between characters. And it really works. Dennis Lehane wrote this movie to near perfection, with believable and sometimes brutal dialogue. I was riveted by just how well written this film was.

Overall, The Drop is an excellent crime-drama with amazing performances and superb dialogue. Even though it is very slow and is a bit predictable at times, it is definitely worth seeing at full price!
