Review of American Assassin (2017) by Scott S — 02 Jun 2018
Vince Flynn's books are absolutely brilliant. The film, though, seems only to have rented the franchise rights and character's names. The script and production rush headlong into a face-paced, farsical presentation of "black ops", as though filmed through the lens of someone who was derisive of the genre, and sought to make a film that highlighted every possible eye-rolling stereotype and plot device.
This would be the 'Sharknado' of spy thrillers, if it wasn't so uncomfortably apparent that the genre being inadvertently spoofed was either grossly misunderstood or willfully disrespected by the production.
With the exception some impressive technical fight choreography, the film is a missed opportunity.
