Review of The Drop (2006) by Brett H — 06 Jan 2015
An unconventional gangster pic which focuses more on the setting and the characters who inhabit it than shoot-outs and people getting whacked. The story is written by famed crime author, Dennis Lehane and his focus on the smaller ends of the mob spectrum is refreshing to see.
Tom Hardy delivers a superb understated performance as an unassuming crook who mostly stumbled into the life due to his family ties to the business. James Gandolfini is excellent in what is his last film role before his death and he picked a great film to book-end his legacy.
There are moments of violence and they are effective as hell but I really enjoyed seeing the inner workings of a "Drop Bar" which was a totally new concept to me. The film treads familiar ground, but the performances from everyone involved elevate what could've been a routine mob drama.
