Review of The Drop (2006) by Dan H — 28 Mar 2015
Believe it or not, Dennis Lehane actually wrote the screenplay for this film and it is base on one of his short stories. It's nice to see Tom Hardy play a normal guy for a change, I really liked James Gandolfini and Noomi Rapace was pretty great as well.
The Drop is a surprisingly simple story, but it's still got a good deal of tension in it and like most of Dennis Lehane's work it's kind of bleak (This one does have a ray of hope though).
The dog in the film is also absolutely adorable, and it's the story with with the dog and Tom Hardy's and Noomi Rapce's relationship that outshines everything else (I also like the big climax, and the short speech Tom Hardy gives afterwards).
My only complaints: There are way too many blurry shots, and the ending kind of drags itself out (I do like the way they chose to end it though). While it's certainly not the best Dennis Lehane adaptation we've received thus far, The Drop is still a simple, dark but surprisingly sweet at times crime drama.
