Review of A Futile and Stupid Gesture (2018) by Dan H — 30 Jan 2018
A movie that argues that tragedy makes for the best comedy. It's a film about the making of National Lampoon, done in the style of one of their films (and indeed, it's the closest we've gotten to a movie that feels like a National Lampoon movie in a long time).
It's very sad and also absolutely fuckin' hilarious. Will Forte (as Doug Kenney), Domhnall Gleeson (as Henry Beard), Matt Walsh (as Matty Simmons), Jon Daly (as Bill Murray), and Emmy Rossum (as Kathryn Walker) are all fantastic.
The film does take some liberties (and even openly admits to doing so), but is still a very enjoyable and at times uncomfortable watch.
