Review of The Driver (1978) by Tom F — 30 Jul 2007
Walter Hill is one of the greatest action directors EVER. Now I guess he's a bit past it and doesn't seem to do much, but in his day he made 48hrs, The Warriors, The Driver and Red Heat which isn't highly regarded but I love James Belushi in that film, anyway I digress.
..The Driver is a brilliant action film with non stop car chase sequences through rainy late night city scapes. This is where the 'need for speed' game series got all its ideas!. Ryan O'Neal, playing a bit against type is the brooding and mostly silent 'Driver', a man who's skills behind the wheel see him hired by armed robbers in need of a getaway driver.
Cue an excuse for loads of fantastic car chase scenes!. The scene where O'Neal slowly smashes bits off a Mercedes by bouncing it off walls is pure classic!. I love it.
