Review of The Driver (1978) by Matthew A — 10 Nov 2011
Before Ryan Gosling starred in Drive, Ryan O'Neal played a similar character in Walter Hill's vastly underrated suspenser, The Driver. It's an excellent cat-and-mouse game of wits between O'Neal's Driver and Bruce Dern's detective.
Director Hill chooses a stripped down approach to the material, which allows for elegant uses of silence to tell a visual story. Unlike Gosling's Drive, this movie doesn't manipulate for effect because Hill trusts in the cumulative effect of his picture's many different pieces.
