Review of The Driver (1978) by Rocknblues 8 — 20 Sep 2011
Some say Walter Hill's "The Driver" is far too boring and dialogue free to be a fully engaging experience. I ask, why do we need to know the background of "The Driver"? The film is a tribute to the noir genre from the 40's and 50's. And you must expect that the lead character is going to be mysterious, and yes.... Sometimes the dialogue is stiff, and the actors are hard nosed and less emotional than we see in action movies.
Simply put... It's about a battle of two wills. A cat and mouse game between a criminal and a cop if you will. The film contains three big scenes that deliver what you want out of a film like this. And without CGI and bloated special effects! I must say that The Driver is not a film of depth... It's just an awesome car chase film and one that influenced filmmaker Michael Mann.
