Review of The Dressmaker (2015) by Sam P — 11 Mar 2016
Jocelyn Moorhouse hasn't directed anything in nearly 20 years, and it shows. A confusing, manic, contrived mess of a film that wastes Kate Winslet completely. The film can't decide whether it is trying to be a black comedy or period drama and spends most of its time veering wildly between the two, becoming neither in the process.
The supporting characters are two-dimensional and wildly over-acted to the point of histrionics, the narrative is jerky, and the entire effect is jarring and unsettling, like watching schoolchildren try to perform open heart surgery.
Judy Davis does a good turn as Mad Molly but it's the best of a bad bunch. Avoid unless you've been eating the hashish cake as well.
