Review of The Dressmaker (2015) by Chloe E — 28 Apr 2017
The Dressmaker is a well-made film for quirky audiences that enjoy a combination of comedy, drama and tragedy. Tilly Dunnage (played by Kate Winslet) returns to her old hometown, to care for her mother (Judy Davis) and find out if she murdered somebody, as she was accused of by the majority of the town.
The storyline is a rollercoaster, with its ups and downs between her and the citizens. We watch her lose everybody she cares for, and take revenge upon the citizens that made her feel cursed. The uses of music within this film are excellent, and the acting performances were fantastic, as were the costumes and set designs.
Personally, I was very swayed, and taken with the movie, especially at the beginning where it is very well told, and with the flashbacks that eventually piece together, and the complete absurdity of the citizens was well expressed, although not everybody would be able to understand it, and to feel that I understand it and can enjoy it makes the film feel personal for me, and my pity for Tilly deepens.
I think what makes this film different from others is the extreme unpredictability of it.
