Review of The Dressmaker (2015) by Mark K — 04 Jan 2017
I normally shy away from movies noted as "dark comedies" for the fact that it seems there are very few writers who understand what that actually means: eg August: Osage County...
The Dressmaker however fits nicely within the "dark comedy" genre providing a nice mix of drama and comedy - just when you think it's getting too dark, there is something to lighten the mood a bit. While I do agree this film has a bit of overkill in the bad luck that befalls Tilly Dunnage, it is done to illustrate the point of Tilly's curse - which could have been it a bit more throughout - by the time the main point about it was made, I forgot about it from the beginning.
Overall, I think this is one of the best movies I saw in 2016 and is a MUST SEE for anyone who loves Prescilla Queen of the Desert or To Wong Fu.
