Review of The Dressmaker (2015) by Jane W — 06 Feb 2018
This is one of those movies that has me thinking of the little details long after the credits. You can barely look away from Kate Winslet who plays a women who returns to the town who shunned her as a child, and is so poor that reputation is the real currency.
She returns to take care of her ailing mother who sent her away after an accident involving the death of a young boy- for which she was blamed. She returns a Parisian rained seamstress and both the women and men of the town learn what new outfit can do to change their persona.
The shots of the gowns she makes juxtaposed to the dusty failing town, was moving art and absolutely stunning cinematography. The reality of poverty, mixed with the constant longing to be included and the lengths people will go to cover their shame, takes you on an emotional journey.
