You cannot believe what you see is the central conceit of Greenaway's playful and convoluted murder, in an English garden, mystery. Which is a perfect commentary on both cinema and the narrative itself.
History and fiction play with each other as Anthony Higgins' draughtsman is contracted to produce 12 views of a country estate, unaware of the real duplicitous intentions of his contractor/s.
