Review of The Draughtsman's Contract (1982) by Ld P — 22 Sep 2009
The Draughtsman's Contract (1982) Directed by Peter Greenaway director of Cook Thief Cook Lover one of my all time favorite Art Films. This is his first full feature. Originally 3 hours he cut 103 minutes from it.
After viewing today I would like to see version with all 3 hours. This film was filmed in 16mm film and blown up to 35 millimeter. DVD is from restored version from 16 mm (I think) Greenaway is a genius this is one of the more unusual films I have ever seen.
Its set in 1694 and about a painter doing a set of drawing for rich folks in england. He gets paid and gets sex acts from the women in return. Then there is a murder. this proceed in a most unusual manner.
The upper crust mannerisms dress conversations and quip are most interesting. Be sure and read Ebert's review. Really fascinating movie. four stars maybe five stars sheer brilliance. I don't think families or your average movie goer would understand or want to see this movie.
