Review of The Draughtsman's Contract (1982) by Gabriel K — 26 Nov 2011
The Draughtsman's Contract is meticulously made. Every frame, costume and word is planned out and wonderfully executed. As such, it's more of a masterclass in how to organize actors and mise-en-scene than anything else.
It's defiantly a feast for the eyes, even if the plot is ridiculous and convoluted. Peter Greenaway seems to realize this, however, and makes no attempt to make it seem anything less with the naked statue that haunts the film.
It's wordy, slow and confusing, and completely soulless, but technically it is a masterpiece.
