Review of The Double Life of Véronique (1991) by Robert H — 15 Dec 2010
To preface, The Double LIfe of Veronique is most definitely an ambiguous work, one which will undoubtedly provoke a different rationalization and reaction from each viewer. That said, my analysis of Veronique is this: it is an exemplification of those special individuals who are overwhelmed by life, and its endless hidden beauty.
The film itself is one with its character, and both embody a remarkable spontaneity and utter beauty. Both are also sensitive to the world, equally moved by small moments and materials and defined by them; the result a deep, complicated interior.
At this point, even I am a bit lost. Don't expect Veronique to make perfect sense, either. But if you are one of these people who crumbles at great art and rich storytelling, prepare to be nailed with one of the finest, and perhaps most profound film experiences you can find.
