Review of The Doors (1991) by Rob C — 20 Feb 2010
The Doors have been my favorite band for as long as I can remember. I've always pictured myself as the frontman of The Doors, pretending to be like Morrison. I loved his lyrics, his swagger and most of all his voice when he performed. I have every album, song and almost every book that was released of him. I still wish to visit his grave site, which is not impossible, but might take a while considering I don't live anywhere near where he's buried. I'm not going to pretend to know everything about Jim Morrison and The Doors, but what I do know, I cherish very much. This film, though I give so much credit on being correct on his music, falsely describes Jim Morrison. In my mind, I don't see him this way. Maybe I'm completely diluting myself and I'm smoke-screening my denial with candy-coated dreams and delusions of granduer, but I'm certain Morrison wasn't as vulgar as this. If he was, it won't put down any hopes I have of him. He's still very high on my pedestal, but I want a film to show how he really was, not on how he was thought of as. Oliver Stone needed to do some background checking before he went through with this film.
The Doors has a healthy dose of music for any Doors fan, myself included. What it lacked in accuracy, it more than made up for in what songs were played. I really do love the soundtrack to this film. Val Kilmer can play a very convincing role as Jim Morrison in song and in look. But, this movie showcased him as a drugged out asshole, which I'm sure Morrison was not. The Doors are my favorite band, as I previously stated, and watching interviews of Morrison and then this film, it portrays him in a different light. Most of the film has him seducing a different woman, being highly inebriated, or very edgy with his band. I'm sure there was more to Morrison than that. A good film, but not very accurate on his life. Stick to the autobiographies or live performances to capture Jim Morrison and The Doors in their full glory.
