Review of The Do-Over (2016) by William H — 26 May 2016
Thoroughly unpleasant, The Do-Over moves at a glacial pace. For 40 minutes, the audience waits for some conflict, for something, but instead the filmmakers leave us with characters we don't like and jokes that don't land.
Side characters are introduced for no real reason, and do nothing besides prolong. It's obvious that this film was written with not story in mind, but rather as an excuse to allow Sandler and Spade to go on vacation.
Speaking of the duo, it's painfully obvious that the two are toxic for one another when it comes to their performances. They don't care, and I don't care. This is the laziest of filmmaking- not a single moment in this adventure film inspires wonder or joy.
It's jokes are lazy, the tone often much too dark (perhaps because Sandler has come to believe that "adult films" are films where everyone acts like an asshole- see "That's My Boy" for more proof of this), and the product placement is insulting.
How the mighty have fallen...
