Review of The Divorcee (1930) by Daniel K — 22 Dec 2009
I am amazed on how contemporary this film is. Norma Shearer is a feminist force of nature in this film playing Jerry, who believes and practices gender equality as best she can with her husband Ted. However, such equality is tested when Ted cheats on her, she finds out, he tries to justify it, and Jerry ends up cheating on him.
This film questions the double standards society places within the genders and Norma Shearer does so glamorously. My favorite scene is when she gets angry at such double standard and divorces Ted. It's a great movie, unique in its kind, and deserves Shearer the Best Actress Oscar for the year of 1930.
