Review of The Devils (1971) by Ross G — 21 Dec 2008
What most think when they see this film is 'This is the sickest most depraved thing committed to celluloid. This is far from the case. What we have here is a movie about the locality of government and the Vatican's attempts to unify church and state, thus, undermining the sovereignty of all nations under the dominance of Christianity.
We also have Grandier and his exploration of sin, his character, though polluted and lustful is one of the purest in the film. When not bombarding you with a sensory madness (delivered in an satirical excess) the dialogue is potent powerful and beautifully delivered.
