Review of The Devils (1971) by Carfax A — 09 Jul 2015
I just saw this film for the 1st time a few weeks ago and what a *&^%& trip. Ken Russell movies have always been somewhat flamboyant and over the top. We have a creepy yet disturbingly sexy hunchback Nun who is sex starved for Father Grandier(Oliver Reed). We have the Father himself who is flawed by his own desires to sleep with woman. We have a crazy witch hunter who looks like something out of Tommy meets Easy Rider, and a nunnery with a at least 30 minutes of naked woman running around to be dissolved of "demons" via sexual discipline. Not only does this movie show us that at the height of "witch-hunting" in 17th century France ,nuns and priest were not immune to accusations of witchcraft, but also that discrimination of hunchback individuals apparently was ok and in some cases, seemed to be a weekend sport..
If you can find this movies, check it out this weekend. It really is a freak show of sex and hmmmmmm.... well sex....
