Review of The Devil-Ship Pirates (1964) by Greg W — 31 Aug 2010
The Devil-Ship Pirates is a rather cheesy pirate film from Hammer Studios, but it does have an interesting premise: a group of pirates who are requisitioned for the Spanish armada's attack upon England in 1588 suffer crippling damage to their ship and stray into an English port town.
When they arrive in the town, they convince the locals that the Spanish armada has defeated the English forces and that they have come to install their authority in England. General pirate shenanigans ensue, and there is nothing overly clever about the film aside from its premise.
But Christopher Lee is awesome as the Spanish pirate captain, and the film provides an entertaining Hammer romp for those who enjoy such cinematic pleasures.
