Review of The Devil Rides Out (1968) by Dave J — 06 Sep 2011
One of Hammer's better films, and quite possibly as close as the studio ever came to matching the termite art some found in the Val Lewton RKO productions of the 1940s... It's Fisher who should get most of the credit, for keeping the camp down and the pace up (we immediately know things are getting bad when someone tries to throttle Paul Eddington); the result rollicks along, shaking off some of the tattiness that (whether unfairly or not) came to be associated with the Hammer film, and marking out, in its own unpretentious way, some of the terrain British screen horror would return to time and again.
