Review of The Departed (2006) by Sam C — 28 May 2013

Martin Scorsese has proved time and time again that he is one of the best filmmakers of all-time and it does it once more with 2006's The Departed. The Departed is a terrific film that has everything you would look for in a great movie.

Great writing? Check. Great directing? Check. Great performances? Check. Let me go a little more in depth into each of those categories. First off the screenplay that was written by William Monahan is just absolutely incredible.

The story is just brilliant and it's told in a very satisfying way because a story like this could have been told very poorly. Every plot twist in this movie surprised me and had me very satisfied.

This film also has one of the craziest endings I've ever seen. Another thing that was great about the film writing was the film's dialogue, the dialogue actually sounded as if it were real life because it's just what you would hear out of people today.

Scorsese has always done a magnificent job at telling a story and he helps Monahan's screenplay come to life. One thing Scorsese did a great job at was creating suspense, there were so many scenes in this movie were I was at the edge of my seat.

Another thing Scorsese does a good job at is pacing the movie because the film is two and a half hours long but it never feels like the film is dragging or going by slow. As fast as acting goes it's truly stunning.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon both give some of the best performances of their career, they are both incredible actors who have given many great performances but their performances in this movie are just standout.

They are joined by a knockout supporting cast which includes Jack Nicholson, Mark Wahlberg, and Martin Sheen. Overall The Departed is another Scorsese classic that I highly recommend.
