Review of The Deep (1977) by Jack B — 02 Jun 2012
2: The underwater scuba diving scenes are reasonably impressive, but not when one compares them to pictures like Thunderball or Encounters at the End of the World, to choose two from opposite ends of the spectrum.
I'd say a picture like The Abyss definitely has it beat as well. The beginning of the film is pretty funny. I wonder what Bisset thought of the wet t-shirt. It certainly kept me interested, but her performance was a bit lacking when compared to a film like Bullitt.
It's really a hammy, nonsense filled adventure that's meant to be escapist. It just didn't quite hit on all cylinders though. To succeed as an escapist fantasy the picture has to retain your attention throughout and transport one to another world; the Deep did not.
The lure of the treasure definitely helped pick things up in the 2nd half, but it was too little too late to some extent. A more academic treasure-hunter picture would have been more welcome for me. It certainly has a Hollywood-worthy ending though.
