Review of The Debussy Film (1965) by Jenna I — 08 Mar 2010
Written with Melvyn Bragg, Russell uses the film-w/in-a-film structure to comment on artistic process as it interrelates with personal conflicts and relationships. A lot of this comes through in the performance of Vladek Sheybal as the onscreen director of the film, commenting on production difficulty.
A very young Oliver Reed is featured as DeBussy, brooding quite convincingly among gorgeous surroundings. It's an impressive achievement, especially for a BBC doc of the time.
