Review of The Death of Mr. Lazarescu (2005) by Tyler P — 25 Feb 2008
This is what might happen if the Dardenne brothers (The Son, The Child) remade Bringing out the Dead. The story plays out more or less in real time, but it moves slowly too; think Samuel Beckett directing an episode of 24.
Lazarescu is kind of hard to evaluate because everything in it seems so real, which is a pretty rare achievement in itself. There are also some funny moments, but they're easy to miss and they're also sad at the same time.
