Review of The Death of Mr. Lazarescu (2005) by Simon P — 27 Oct 2009
A Romanian masterclass in realism, this documentary style comedy really has nothing to laugh at but is a grim and thoroughly depressing depiction of the decline of a 62 year old man. Class filmmaking that shows an unsympathetic system where medical staff have little time, even less respect and are simply not allowed to care. Difficult to watch, however the performances are so natural and believable that the 150 minutes you spend with these characters are as rewarding as they are moving.
Painful. Tragic. Shit. Life.
