Review of The Death of Mr. Lazarescu (2005) by Joe J — 12 Jan 2016
One of the best films of the 2000s, an existential masterpiece. Funny, suspenseful, moving, insightful, critical, profound. The direction is the star of the film: Detached and empathic at the same time, a cool observation of the final days of human life.
The film can be read as a critique of Romanian institutions at that time, but it's much more universal: This film is about the fundamental ignorance of institutions to human suffering and the loneliness of the dying.
