Review of The Dead Zone (1983) by Darren R — 03 Dec 2013
There are plenty of individual elements in this film that I enjoy, but unfortunately they don't add up to a whole lot. Walken is a great lead, and Cronenberg does what he can with the material while still trying to make it his own.
The biggest problem, however, lies with the script. A good idea, but there isn't an overarching plot. The movie jumps from one situation to the next without a very strong link between these moments in terms of story.
Sure, thematically and psychologically there is plenty going on, but not so much in terms of onscreen action. The first "episode" really has nothing to do with the murder mystery, which in turn has nothing to do with the final plot device.
Still, good performances and cinematography keep this movie from being forgettable. Also, fine score from Michael Kamen, sounding very much like Cronenberg regular Howard Shore mixed with John Williams.
