Review of The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) by Stevan K — 21 Dec 2008
When I heard they were going to do a remake of 'The Day The Earth Stood Still', I figured I should probably hire the original before it got butchered. And I'm glad I did. This film is excellent.
Like all good sci-fis it's not about blowing shit up, it's about political issues and social commentary. And unlike alot of action movies nowadays, it's well written and extremely well cast. Some of the character portrayals were very ahead of their time. Mrs Benson in particular is an excellent character. For a film made in 1951, the feminist and pacifist undertones are strong.
One of the reasons why this film is so good is that its message will always be relevant. A true classic.
I shudder to think what Keanu Reeves is going to do to this film.
