Review of The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) by Justin C — 29 Apr 2010
At a time when nearly every science fiction film which featured aliens depicted frightening creatures who were only here to threaten humanity, out comes this truly classy, intelligent and mature movie which treats its subject matter seriously and actually tries to deliver a message.
Klaatu, an alien ambassador, portrayed by Michael Rennie in one of his finest roles, comes to Earth to deliver a message...unless we give up our warlike ways and learn to live in peace with one another, the planet will be destroyed by Gort, the powerful robot which accompanies Klaatu.
These robots are like interstellar policemen, keeping a vigilant eye on each world and making sure no one breaks the rules. So far ahead of its time, and one of the top science fiction films of all time, easily.
"Klaatu barrada nicto.".
