Review of The Day the Earth Caught Fire (1961) by Jeffrey Y — 16 Nov 2014
It may be from 1962, but "The Day The Earth Caught Fire" is remarkably relevant. OK - you may want to substitute nuclear accident for global warming but this is a superb science fiction which is close to science fact.
I suppose you could take issue about the fact the heroes work for The Daily Express but it feels authentic from a time when journalism was more respected than politicians and journalists tell the truth, despite being functioning alcoholics.
The acting particularly Leo McKern is really good although the real editor of The Daily Express - Arthur Christiansen - who plays the Daily Express editor - struggles. Still Val Guest made a brilliant film which stands up through the years.
The ending is ambiguous and the feel is bleak, which makes it feel real. Oh and Janet Munro's character and acting is terrific - far better than the contemporary portrayal of women. Very good extras as well.
Not sure why is has taken 52 years for me to see this film - but I am so glad I have seen this remastered version.
