Review of The Dark Knight Rises (2012) by Zach G — 25 Dec 2015
'The Dark Knight Rises' is a film that wisely eschews the thrill-a-minute formula of its equally brilliant predecessor in favor of a more intimate and complex examination of the man behind the cowl.
Bale turns in his best performance of the series, giving us an honest and tortured portrayal of a man who is damaged by his experiences as Batman, both mentally and physically. Tom Hardy quite literally lends a real weight to the menacing, muscle-bound mercenary, Bane.
Even with over half of his face obscured, Hardy manages to convey raw emotion and pure terror using just his eyes, his intimidating physicality, and his unique voice behind his metal mask. In short, the entire cast is superb, the story is engagingly rich, and Hans Zimmer's rousing score enhances the breathtaking action sequences shot in immersive IMAX format.
This is a dark, exhilarating, and grandiose conclusion to what is surely one of the best trilogies ever put on the big screen.
