Review of The Damned United (2009) by Kat K — 08 Dec 2009
Michael Sheen is excellence.
I never knew who Brain Clough was, I'm not into sports much, and I'm American-- despite all this I was thoroughly engaged in The Damned United.
What I got was a very character-driven plot with outstanding performances and an excellent cast. Still, Brian Clough's character (played by Michael Sheen) is a bit of a mystery. The plot worked well to demonize him and humanize him -- sometimes egotistical and harsh, and sometimes beaten and hurt -- but you see why, and the movie provides insights into his personal life, reasons for his actions and reasons for the actions, or reactions, of those around him.
What was most touching, and the part I found most humanizing of Brian's character, was the interview with Revie (played by Colm Meaney); and the end with Peter Taylor (played by Timothy Spall), with Brian begging for their relationship back. I got the impression that Brian's passion was the sport and he wanted to win, ALL about the sport and winning.. till set straight. Sheen's performance was very well done. It's hard to sum up his performance for the whole of the movie... but his mannerisms were excellent, the scene described right above was actually blushingly painful for someone who gets embarrassed for others (that *really* happened?!!) and sympathetic... Generally glued to the screen through more than half of the film. The Irish accent fades in and out, but then we flipped back and forth different years and different locations, so I wouldn't doubt the accuracy there as well.
With regards to football/soccer/rugby *enter in what it's call in your country here, lol*, excellent job working in just enough to satisfy those wanting to see some action; and relaxed enough that us poor non-sports slobs can enjoy and appreciate the story, and possibly get interested in the sport. I was actually surprised to find that Sheen is athletic himself. Niceee.
Bad? I've heard a few complaints over what happened, when and where -- I guess a couple liberties were taken -- but all in all, this was a well-told story. If you can get a hold of this, it makes for a wonderful evening movie, both sports enthusiasts and film enthusiasts can enjoy. Recommended - 8.2/10.
