Review of The Cowboys (1972) by Braden J — 25 Jul 2009
One of John Wayne's better 70's efforts.
The Cowboys (1972) - 6.3/10.
Director - Mark Rydell.
Starring - John Wayne, Bruce Dern, Colleen Dewhurst, Roscoe Lee Browne, Slim Pickens, Robert Carradine, Lonny Chapman.
Wil Anderson (John Wayne) hires a bunch of kids to help on a cattle drive after his old crew quits. Wayne plays the grandfatherly role quite well and the "coming-of-age" element makes this more interesting than most of Wayne's later day westerns. The villians are solid as well. The fact that some critics believe this film contains a definite "conservative agenda" makes it a curiosity as well considering Wayne's righty leanings.
