Review of The Cowboys (1972) by Jameson W — 28 Mar 2012
One of my personal all-time faves. Watched it with the kids tonight; I'll know if they liked it if Mark starts roping the saw horse. Half of the "cowboys" were actors; the other half were actual cowboys, each teaching the other their craft.
It's a coming of age story mixed with a grizzled old man and evil cattle rustlers. I still can't see Bruce Dern as a good guy in any movie. Many believe this was one of The Duke's best performances; watching it now 40 years later, I'd have to agree.
I remember watching it in the theater as a 12 year old and hearing a woman behind me crying and saying "he can't die, he just can't". In addition to a great story, incredible acting and beautiful John Williams music, throw in some gorgeous CO scenery and it is a movie that captures a piece of Americana.
