Review of The Country Girl (1954) by Megan D — 31 Jan 2006
After I got over the inital disappointment that this wasn't a comedy, I found myself drawn into this little bit of drama... I didn't even recognize Grace Kelly at first - certainly not her most glamorous part, but it was obviously effective enough to win her an Oscar. I was more impressed with William Holden's performance, personally.
And I'm still a sucker for Bing Crosby, even if he beat his children... this was the first movie where I could actually see him drawing from that anger? or idea that he had to present a perfect picture to those on the outside of his family. Makes the idea that the "sweet-tongued Irishman" could manipulate with the best of them.
In any case, an excellent movie.
