Certainly a deep, moving movie with powerful characters, an engaging plot, and gradual, surprising revelations about everyone's motive and meaning. The film includes several musical numbers, yet it remarkably maintains a dark, serious theme throughout by keeping these songs to real-life contexts, like stage rehearsals and recordings. A very clever mix of high, stark drama and song. Especially interesting was how the flashback scene appeared so light and happy, like those genre musicals and films of the 40s and 50s, yet once the flashback ended, we are thrust again into the very real, rough world of Frank Elgin and his wife. A fascinating contrast that makes one see both sides of the picture.

Quite interesting, as well, to see Bing Crosby and Grace Kelly so unglamorous and deep. No wonder she won Best Actress and he was nominated for Best Actor. A very fulfilling movie, with a great cast and worthwhile themes.
