Review of The Counterfeiters (2007) by Justin A — 22 Dec 2009
Everything you feel when you hear about yet another WWII drama involving Nazi's and concentration camps will likely be tossed out the window after you watch "The Counterfeiters".
It shows you things you've seen before in films such as "Schindler's List" and "The Pianist" or the TV Film "Uprising": a hardcore realism, the grim and inhumane ways the Nazi's treated Jewish people. But at times it didn't feel like you were watching actors playing roles, you find yourself cringing and thinking you're watching a documentary like "Night and Fog". But this film differs from the films I've mentioned above because this film was made into more of a suspense thriller. But not a thriller like the Tom Cruise film "Valkyrie" - that movie didn't have a heart, there were zero negotiations on a moral level.
"Counterfeiters" true feeling moral dilemma was the fact that in order to live you had sell your soul to the devil. There were mental consequences to simple actions in this film. Do you do your country a favor and stand up for it, or do you play along with the devil to ensure your own survival?
